DRWS NESAF

Drws Nesaf, so called because it is ‘next door’ to us, is a cosy stone cottage originally built in 1856 as quarters for the servants of Abergwrelych House. We know the exact date from finding, during renovation, a new Young Victoria penny placed under the windowsill; a practice common to builders wishing to date their work.

Today it retains the character of the 19th Century, while at the same time providing up-to-date comforts and amenities.

Living Area: The ground-floor sitting room/dining area is traditional and cosy, with a coal-fired Rayburn stove, which provides central heating for the whole cottage (coal and electricity are included in the tariff). There is a colour television, VCR, radio/cassette player and lots of games and books.

Kitchen: The kitchen, with its handmade, reclaimed wood storage units, is well-equipped with a refrigerator, an electric oven and rings, a microwave, butler sink, electric kettle, toaster and ample cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils.

Bedrooms: There are two bedrooms, one galleried double bedroom connected, via shower room, to a twin-bedded bedroom. All bedlinen and duvets are provided.

Shower room: There is a fully tiled electric shower, wash-hand basin and WC. Fluffy bath/hand towels are provided.

Garden: The old farmyard is now a sunny garden area with a lawn and shrubs and a patio with garden furniture and a barbeque. Guests are free to walk in our fields and feed our friendly hens.

Parking: Ample parking in grounds.

Pets: Well behaved pets are welcome.

Access: We regret the cottage is not wheelchair accessible.

History: Abergwrelych House dates from the eighteenth century when it was a ‘gentleman’s residence’. One claim to fame is that Jane Williams of Aberpergwm House acknowledged, in her collection of ‘The Airs of Gwent and Morgannwg’ her debt to ‘poor Leyshon Jones’ the Oxford educated vicar, who lived at Abergwrelych, for his contribution of the folk song Aderyn Pur. The house has a long and interesting history. However, there is far too much to relate here, so a fact sheet is always given as a farewell gift to our guests.
